The Siam Hotel: Now Open in Bangkok
June 12, 2012 - The much-anticipated Siam officially opens its doors today. Nestled among Bangkok's historical palaces, temples and museums in the city's royal Dusit district, the luxury boutique hotel is set on 3 acres of premium Chao Praya river frontage.
Owner and Thai celebrity Krissada Sukosol Clapp conceived the 39-suite retreat with globally acclaimed architect and designer Bill Bensley. Each suite is individually designed with a unique theme (from local architecture to beauty queens, music to military, diplomats to contemporary art), with every public and private space drawing on Thai life and culture through the ages, as well as original turn-of-the-century oriental artwork and antiquities from Krissada's private art collections.
Featuring Bangkok's most spacious suites, The Siam offers 10 private pool villas with open-air roof terraces (four with uninterrupted river views). In the Main Residence (adjacent to the spa with convenient access to the gym, library and meeting room), are 16 Siam Suites (standard rooms) and 12 Mae Nam Suites (river view). Additionally, the premier accommodation, Connie's Cottage, offers an unforgettably unique experience allowing guests to stay in a century-old Thai teakwood house sourced by silk tycoon Jim Thompson and former socialite owner Connie Mangskau, who hosted an array of cosmopolitan characters including Jacqueline Kennedy, Henry Ford, John Rockefeller and Roger Moore. All rooms are outfitted with super-sized king beds, lofty ceilings, Art Deco-style living rooms, airy bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and walk-in showers. Upon request, personal butlers cater each suite. Complimentary wi-fi is available property-wide.
Three additional Thai houses form together to make Chon, The Siam's signature Thai restaurant and cooking school where guests savor and create authentic Thai cuisine. Executive Chef Blair Mathieson showcases innovative yet classic dishes drawing on Thailand's finest produce, delivered farm-to-table with sublime service in a serene riverfront setting. The dapper Deco Bar & Bistro serves home-style meals and small plates set to live music in a jazzy atmosphere. Cafe Cha is the all-day patisserie replete with shady veranda and garden where guests may indulge in a range of freshly baked pastries while sipping perfectly brewed cups of coffee, tea or exotic local infusions.
Although very intimate in nature, the sprawling Siam still has many gorgeous facilities, including a comprehensive spa and hammam; a period style library; a state of the art screening room; a stylish meeting room; a spacious gym with retro decor; an inspiring outdoor grass yoga sala; a breezy art gallery under a 14-meter-high glass arcade; a charming antique gift shop; a riverside infinity swimming pool with jacuzzi beds and poolside bar; a tranquil conservatory with roof garden; a private pier with Thai barge and luxury speedboat for chic cruising; a classic coffee house for good measure, and of course, Bensley's sculpted and revered gardens throughout.
Opium Spa features Sodashi therapies and spa products comprising the finest ethically-sourced essential oils and plant actives to visibly heal and nurture. Guests choose from facial, body and massage therapies or indulge in a tailored multi-day spa package to suit individual needs. Engage a personal fitness trainer and work out in the gym, or take a yoga class on the outdoor grass yoga terrace. Unwind in the sumptuous hammam-inspired Bath House with dry and steam saunas, steam showers and Jacuzzis. A kids' and teen spa treatment menu and a full-service hair and nail salon are also available.
The Siam's gymnasium is the first professionally-equipped luxury Muay Thai gym in Bangkok, with a variety of training programs for beginners or advanced boxers. Programs take place between daily and include an excursion to a local Muay Thai training center and Muay Thai fight. Chef Mathieson will ensure guests follow the right diet during training, and spa treatments are also suggested to help ease muscle tension.
