Sustainable Travel CEO and Founder Appointed to National Travel and Tourism Advisory Board

. May 13, 2013

May 13, 2013 - Brian T. Mullis , who founded leading global non-profit Sustainable Travel International in 2002 and continues to serve as its CEO, has been appointed to the United States National Travel and Tourism Advisory Board. The official announcement was made this week by U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Rebecca Blank, and coincides with National Travel and Tourism Week.

The Board, established in 2003, serves as the advisory body to the Secretary of Commerce on matters relating to the travel and tourism industry in the United States. Its members represent a broad cross-section of the industry, including transportation services, financial services, and hotels and restaurants, as well as a mix of small and large firms from across the country.

Mullis joins five other new appointees to the Board, which is chaired by Travel Oregon Executive Director Todd Davidson.

“I am thrilled about my appointment to the National Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, which demonstrates the increasing importance of sustainability to the national tourism strategy,” said Mullis. “The United States has great untapped potential for attracting international travelers. Growth in this area will equate to job creation and localized economic development, both of which ultimately ensure that travelers positively impact the destinations they visit.”

Mullis is an internationally recognized expert in sustainable tourism development. He boasts an extensive track record of successful project development and implementation with international partners spanning 20-plus years. During his career, he has designed and developed solutions for destinations and businesses in more than 40 countries across five continents, in areas like low carbon tourism, market access, capacity building, enterprise development, and sustainable tourism standards.

Under his leadership, Sustainable Travel International has become the leading global NGO focused on innovative sustainable tourism development and conservation solutions for the travel and tourism industry.

“The travel and tourism industry is an important driver of our export success, and a strong source of U.S. jobs,” said Deputy Secretary Blank. “Travel and tourism supported nearly 8 million U.S. jobs in 2012, and last week's jobs report showed continued growth in the leisure and hospitality industry. These new members of the Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, who come from different regions and industry sub-sectors, will play a valuable role as we work to help maintain the momentum that's currently underway.”
