Malta To Host Final Commemorative Event On 60th Anniversary of VE
MALTA, July 26, 2005. As more than 600 veterans of the Second World War return to Malta this September for the 60th anniversary VE celebrations, Chevron Air Holidays, the Malta specialist, will be offering outstanding value on a choice of hotels all within a stones throw of the action.
Malta plays host to the final commemorative event of the anniversary celebrations - for the first time in over fifty years, the 'Merlins', better known as defence airplanes, the Spitfire and the Hurricane, will be seen flying over Malta's skies in what will probably be the last time that these aircraft, veterans and the people of Malta who lived through the 1942 'Air Battle of Malta' will be gathered together.
The two vintage aircraft, restored by specialists based in the UK, begin their three-day flight at the Imperial War Museum in Cambridgeshire and arrive at the Maltese capital of Valletta on the 22nd September, where they will remain stationed at the Air Battle of Malta hangar for one week.
The 'Merlins' were instrumental in helping the then British colony of Malta to win back control of the Mediterranean skies in 1942, after the island was subjected over a period of two months to more bomb attacks than London experienced during the entire Blitz.
Valletta is not just the beautiful baroque capital of Malta, but also the hub for many 60th anniversary VE celebrations, and is the place to be during this nostalgic week.
Chevron Air Holidays offers a choice of three, four and five star accommodation just a taxi or bus ride away from Valletta, at the seaside resort of Sliema. Prices start from lb375 for seven nights, half board, at the three star Plaza Hotel, or for only lb403 you can stay for seven nights, half board, at the four star Howard Johnson Diplomat Hotel. Prices are based on two adults sharing, and include return scheduled flights from Gatwick with Air Malta, flight supplements, fuel surcharges and transfers, departing 21 September.
