Denver - April 28, 2014 - On Tuesday, April 22, the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel celebrated Earth Day by inviting several members of the Denver philanthropic community to tour the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel's Housekeeping Department and learn about their ongoing recycling and sustainable efforts. These programs include their ongoing contributions to Clean the World as well as their new partnership with Excelsior Youth Center.

The Sheraton's newest community project is a partnership with Excelsior Youth Center. Located on a 33-acre campus in suburban Aurora, Colo., Excelsior Youth Center provides a continuum of residential and community based services to more than 180 girls, ages 11-18. Excelsior's individualized programming provides education, medical and mental health care for teenage girls who for various reasons may no longer be able to live with their own families.

The Sheraton Downtown Denver Hotel is collecting donations for these girls in the form of gently used jeans, tee shirts, cosmetics, robes, pajamas and toiletries. The hotel is also planning a “Done in a Day” event at the Excelsior Center in May, where Sheraton Denver employees will paint and refurbish one of the living areas at the Center.

In addition, the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel has had a commitment for several years to Clean the World, an international organization that recycles leftover soap products, including consolidating the liquid product and sterilizing and re-making into soap for distribution to the needy and the underserved all over the world. As part of their daily duties, the hotel's housekeepers collect all partially used bars of soap, bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body lotion left in the guestrooms. Products are placed in containers in the housekeeping department and then given to Clean the World.

The total recycling and donations for Clean the World on behalf of the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel combined with The Westin Denver Downtown, another locally managed Starwood property that participates in this ongoing partnership and recycling effort, have been over 65,000 bars of soap and 11,000 pounds of plastic recycled to date.

“The Sheraton Downtown Denver Hotel is dedicated to sustainability through our commitment with Clean the World and many other ongoing initiatives that have both a local and global impact,” said Tony Dunn, general manager of the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel. “We are equally proud of our new partnership with the Excelsior Youth Center, to make a difference in the local community. Furthermore, we are continuing to make strides to improve our sustainable footprint,” he added.

The Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel is Colorado's largest hotel with 1,231 guest rooms, 82 luxurious suites and more than 131,000-square-feet of meeting space with six restaurants, a 24-hr Sheraton Fitness by Core Performance facility, Link@Sheraton business center, and heated rooftop pool. Located on the pedestrian 16th Street Mall in the heart of downtown Denver, the hotel is minutes from the Colorado Convention Center. Named one of the top 15 meetings hotels in the U.S., it serves groups of 10 to 3,000 with custom and innovative services, advanced technology, and a green meetings program.
