Ecuador Wants Limits on Galapagos Tourism

. October 14, 2008

AUGUST 23, 2007. Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said he favours reducing the flow of tourists to the Galapagos Islands, the subject of a recent U.N. warning about environmental degradation.

"The government believes that the number of tourists that the Galapagos National Park receives should be reduced," a statement from the president's office said, noting that around 140,000 tourists visit the archipelago every year.

Correa, who travelled to the islands recently to evaluate the situation, said that the Galapagos National Institute should be the entity that regulates the entry of tourists and sets the fees they pay to visit the park.

The president added that the revenue generated from such visits should be invested in the Galapagos, according to the statement.
