January through July, 2008

. October 14, 2008

JANUARY 2, 2008. Winterthur Museum & Country Estate invites you to enjoy spectacular events and exhibitions this year. Here are highlights, January through July 2008.

Double Vision: Winterthur in the 1930s (March 8-May 18). This unique exhibition showcases stereographs, or 3-D photographs, taken of the Winterthur rooms in 1935 and 1938. Visitors will have the chance to encounter Winterthur rooms designed by Henry Francis du Pont early in his collecting career-rooms that in some cases no one has seen for generations. The exhibition is on view in conjunction with Winterthur's second annual Chic It Up! design conference, which takes place May 16-17 and will focus on American design in the 1930s.

Point-to-Point - Celebrating the 30th running! (May 4). Join Winterthur as we celebrate the 30th running of Point-to-Point, featuring the thrill of steeplechase horse racing, the pageantry of an antique carriage parade, and family fun!

Vanity and Virtue: Personal Grooming in America (May-August). This small, jewel-like exhibition will cover the period 1750 to 1850 and will focus on objects in the museum collection and the grooming practices associated with them. Divided into three sections-face, hair, and body-the display will include everything from wig curlers to an 18th-century toothbrush.

Chic It Up! (May 16-17). The theme for this year's annual conference is American design in the 1930s and its continuing influence on current designers. Noted design professionals and Winterthur curators will present a series of lectures focused on this important era in American style.

Silversmiths to the Nation: Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner, 1808-1842 (July 4-September 21). Fletcher & Gardiner were the premier silversmiths of their time, renowned for dramatic presentation pieces for civic and military heroes as well as stylish household silver and jewelry. The first exhibition to focus solely on their work and their influence on the silversmith trade, Silversmiths to the Nation features swords, medals, commemorative works, tea sets, pitchers, dinner services, a candelabrum, vases, and flatware in silver and gold.

Winterthur Museum & Country Estate-known worldwide for its preeminent collection of American antiques, naturalistic garden, and research library for the study of American art and material culture-offers a variety of tours, exhibitions, programs, and activities throughout the year.
