2008 Events at Hagley Museum and Library

BRANDYWINE VALLEY, PA, January 7, 2008. Hagley Museum and Library is where the du Pont story begins. It was here that the gunpowder works of E. I. Du Pont created an empire in 1802, with a lasting legacy throughout the Brandywine region.

Our scenic 235-acre campus stretches along the banks of the Brandywine River. See the first family residence, walk through the original mills of the DuPont Company, and listen tot he stories about the people who lived and worked along the river.

2008 Exhibit

Give it Your Best: Workplace Posters in the United States (April 18-January 4, 2009): Features more than 70 posters from Hagley?s collection. The posters were printed to improve morale and bolster productivity, but are also colorful and striking examples of graphic art. The exhibit spans from 1917 through World War II, and includes Joseph Pennell's WWI poster "That Liberty shall not perish," the Seagrams Corporation's "Loose lips might sink ships," and Norman Rockwell's "Four Freedoms."

2008 Events

Invention Convention (January 19-21): Children enjoy three days of inventing, experimenting, and interactive educational entertainment include a workshop where youngsters design and make gadgets; a table of appliances to take apart and fiddle with, a science-related scavenger hunt, and a Toddler Tools area for the youngest inventors.

Arts and Antiques (March 29-30): The Delaware Foundation for the Visual Arts (DFVA) brings together more than seventy well-known artists from the Brandywine Valley area to exhibit and sell new works. Browse this exceptional collection of original art, sculpture, porcelain, jewelry, and a choice selection of furniture. This year?s featured artist is Kathy Ruck.

Power Up at Hagley (April 20): Hagley joins with Power Up Gambia for a day of family-fun and education. Activities will explore water, steam, and solar power as sources of energy. Additional highlights also include hands-on energy models and exhibits from our library collections. Local students? projects on African culture, renewable energy, and healthcare will also be showcased. Free.

Hagley Car Show (September 14): Browse through more than 600 antique and restored cars that date from the early 1900s to the 1980s. The show features vehicle parades, motoring music, video and go-cart racing, and a festival food court.

Hagley?s Craft Fair (October 18-19): This marketplace brings talented artisans from the Mid-Atlantic to demonstrate, display, and sell fine arts and crafts. Features works in wood, pottery, jewelry, fibers, metal, and other media.

Holiday Exhibit (November 28-January 1, 2009): The1803 du Pont ancestral home at Hagley is decorated for the holidays in colonial revival style. See how dried plant materials, fruit, greens, and a little creativity create the perfect holiday atmosphere.
