Gran Canaria's ClubHotel Riu Papayas Reopens Following $17 Million Renovation and Merger with Riu Flamingo

PALMA DE MALLORCA, SP. June 21, 2016 - RIU Hotels & Resorts reopens one of its most emblematic hotels in Playa del Ingles, in Gran Canaria—the Riu Papayas—after merging it with the Riu Flamingo to create a single resort offering its recognised 24-Hour All-Inclusive service: The ClubHotel Riu Papayas. The total investment in the renovation project was €15 million.

The Riu Papayas and the Riu Flamingo were built in 1985 as a hotel complex with separate operations but sharing facilities like the pools, restaurants, and green zones. Following the fusion of the two buildings, you now enter the hotel under a grand marquee that makes the hotel entrance more majestic.

Inside, a single, larger reception area has been created that provides easier access from the street. Its 406 rooms were refurbished and enlarged, and another nine rooms were created from the large apartments that formerly existed, for a grand total of 468 rooms. All of them now offer fresh, contemporary, 'chill out' decor in keeping with the pure lines of the hotel's minimalist architecture in which materials like glass, steel, aluminium, and wood play a starring role.

Like the rooms, the common areas have been totally renovated. In the restaurants, for example, the dining rooms have been enlarged and opened up to the outdoors through the addition of porches and terraces to let guests enjoy the marvellous temperature of the Canary Islands. In addition to the main, buffet-style restaurant, the ClubHotel Riu Papayas now offers two thematic restaurants: Zhú, serving Asian food, and Ole, specialising in Spanish food.

All the bars have also undergone a radical change. The indoor bar-lounge has disappeared and a new, outdoor one has been created in the garden area with a large terrace and a poolside bar. A new lobby bar, open on all sides and facing the garden, has been created where guests can sit down in the afternoon and evening.

New green zones have been created outside, and the main and children's pools have been renovated, with the latter now offering slides and games. The RiuLand children's club is now located next to the pool, and the solarium and lounge-chair area have been enlarged. In addition, to satisfy the needs of our more active guests, a gym with views of the garden has been built.

The renovation followed the urban development guidelines of the San Bartolome de Tirajana Modernisation and Improvement Plan. For RIU Hotels & Resorts, it is essential to work on improving the tourist facilities of Gran Canaria South to be able to offer all visitors a quality product and a modern destination. So in recent years, it has invested in large-scale renovations of its hotels in Gran Canaria (Riu Don Miguel, in July 2012; the ClubHotel Riu Gran Canaria, reopened in July 2013; and the Riu Palace Meloneras, reopened in August 2014), as well as those in Tenerife (Riu Palace Tenerife and Riu Arecas, reopened in July and October 2015 respectively).
