Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel Completes Two-Year Multi-Million Dollar Renovation

. June 21, 2016

PROVIDENCE, R.I. June 21, 2016 - The Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel, an upscale, arts-inspired hotel affiliated with the Marriott portfolio of branded luxury hotels, celebrated completion last night of extensive, multi-million dollar interior renovations that accentuate the building's origins as a beautiful but never completed 1920s-era Masonic Temple and artfully reflect the vibrant arts and design community and bodies of water that run through and around Providence. Started nearly two years ago, the large-scale renovations were designed to offer a unique guest experience by blending historic elements from the original structure with contemporary, boutique-type flair - all with the intent of inspiring discovery and exploration, which are hallmarks of the Renaissance brand. The Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel is operated by TPG Hotels & Resorts, the hospitality management affiliate of Procaccianti Companies.

“We are beyond thrilled about the outcome of our renovations and the opportunity to share this transformation with the community as part of our Global Day of Discovery,” said Kimberly Greene, general manager of the Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel. “Our entire team feels passionately about the look and feel of the renovations as they not only enhance the interior with a vibrant, intimate boutique feel but thoughtfully incorporate the history of our building while inspiring guests to explore the property.”

The renovations were unveiled at the hotel as part of the fifth annual Global Day of Discovery - when nearly 170 Renaissance hotels, located in more than 35 countries around the world, joined together to inspire discovery among business and leisure travelers, as well as locals. The discovery focus of the brand - captured best in the brand mantra, Live Life to Discover™ - encourages people to discover the unexpected no matter where their travels take them and to experience local live music, epicurean adventures and indigenous arts and culture.

Renovations were aimed at enhancing the building's initial transformation while continuing to tell its unique story. Construction on the building complex started in 1927 as a Masonic Temple with neoclassical architecture, including beautiful marble pillars, but was abandoned in 1928 as the Great Depression set in. With only the outside walls and roof completed, the building stood vacant for 75 years until 2007 - when it was carefully restored and completed as the Renaissance Providence Downtown Hotel.

The current renovations encompass 272 guest rooms - including lavish Presidential and Vice Presidential suites - as well as a fully refurbished lobby, guest corridors, Capitol Boardroom and Club Lounge. Two interior design firms, based in New York City, led the hotel's renovations. Aspirational branding firm Krause + Sawyer, which focuses on the hospitality industry, led the renovations in the hotel's lobby, while dash design - an award-winning New York City and Miami-based interior design and brand consulting firm - led the renovations of the other spaces.

The new lobby plays off a 'water and industry' theme. It's designed to both complement and juxtapose the Masonic architecture while drawing inspiration from the local environment - including the jewelry and silver industry and the fluid, rhythmic and reflective nature of the Providence River and other bodies of water around the city. The entrance area is intended to be an enlivening gateway and the choice of shapes, materials and textures in the space play off the existing backdrop to both highlight the 1920s and create a modern and fresh experience for guests. Unpolished and precious metals meet for a gorgeous mix of blackened steel, silver and gold tones throughout the hotel's interior.

The newly renovated guestrooms exude a warm and modern feel with clean lines blended with a silver and gold palette that honors the local jewelry and silversmith industry along with the building's history. In keeping with the historic Masonic story, guestroom carpets were inspired by stone details from the original lobby floor, while ruler artwork on the walls were influenced by the symbol of Freemasonry. The luxurious Presidential and Vice Presidential suites include all of these elements plus spacious living rooms and unparalleled views of the Rhode Island State House.

Even the corridors of the newly renovated hotel were touched by the building's history. Geometric decor is infused throughout the space and the original blueprints from the Masonic Temple adorn the walls. Additionally, graffiti-inspired artwork helps to highlight the building's unique history.

Other areas that were renovated include the Capitol Room and Club Lounge - both of which received soft-goods facelifts, as well as technological enhancements.
