Highlands Inn Repositioned as Hyatt Carmel Highlands

Reintroduction Solidifies Identity of Carmel's Quintessential Luxury Destination Retreat.

. October 18, 2010

October 15, 2010 - Today, Highlands Inn, Carmel's iconic destination hotel, becomes Hyatt Carmel Highlands - Overlooking Big Sur Coast. A retreat for artists, romantics, savvy travelers, and golfers since opening in 1917, the craftsman-style property combines true Carmel luxury with an approachable and sophisticated spirit. Following extensive renovations to all guestrooms, the hotel's repositioning as Hyatt Carmel Highlands marks the culmination of a significant transformation and authentically captures the property's dramatic positioning overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Big Sur coastline.

“Hyatt Carmel Highlands boasts one of the most spectacular settings in the world,” remarked Mark Bastis, general manager, Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel & Spa, who also has oversight of Hyatt Carmel Highlands. “The new name evokes a sense of place while capturing the hotel's matchless position in Carmel.”

Completed in the fall of 2009, extensive renovations to all 48 guest rooms, including 11 suites, were led by respected designer, Beatrice Girelli of Indidesign. The luxurious remodel included new contemporary design, custom furnishings and a warm, natural color scheme inspired by the surrounding vibrant natural landscape, resulting in sophisticated and restful ambiance. Each guestroom now features modern, high-tech amenities including flatscreen televisions, iHome units, DVD and CD players, and wireless internet access.

In 2009, Pacific's Edge, Hyatt Carmel Highlands' award-winning restaurant, was re-launched with a sophisticated new menu concept featuring California Coastal Cuisine. The introduction of a new food and beverage team in 2010, including director of food and beverage Donald Conn, executive chef Matt Bolton, and wine director Paul Fried, has infused fresh creativity into the culinary and wine programs.

Hyatt Carmel Highlands will be further updated in the winter of 2010 with notable renovations to various hotel spaces and outlets. Sunset Lounge, Lobos Lounge and Fireplace Lounge will be renewed with new furniture, fabrics and colors; several meeting spaces will be similarly outfitted. Hyatt Carmel Highlands' signature gazebo terrace overlooking the Pacific Ocean will be resurfaced with a new deck. Pacific's Edge, the property's award-winning restaurant, will receive new carpeting, and California Market is also slated for updates. Future plans also include a new Stay Fit fitness facility in 2011.

“With this rebranding, we are reintroducing this time-honored hotel as a Hyatt property,” said Sara Kearney, senior vice president, brands, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts. “Warm hospitality, excellent service, and top-level amenities have always been signatures of the hotel, and its spectacular setting, romantic ambiance and inspired dining have drawn discerning travelers back to Hyatt Carmel Highlands year after year.”
