New Hilton Opens in Gdansk, Poland

Modern Meets Medieval

. June 21, 2010

June 18, 2010 - Modern meets medieval with the opening of Hilton Gdansk, a new hotel designed by renowned Polish architect Prof. Stefan Kurlylowicz. The hotel is a striking addition to Gdansk's old city area and is designed to complement the city's wealth of historic buildings with its timeless features and use of traditional materials. Hilton Gdansk is the second Hilton hotel in Poland, where the brand has had a presence since 2007 with Hilton Warsaw Hotel and Convention Centre.

"As the global leader in hospitality, we are pleased to welcome the world's travellers to our second hotel in Poland," Dave Horton, Global Head, Hilton Hotels brand said. "The contemporary design of Hilton Gdansk reflects our signature style while the hotel's respect for the heritage of its historic setting embodies authentic Hilton hospitality that leads with global mind and local heart."

Hilton Gdansk enjoys a waterfront location, in the heart of old town, overlooking the Motlawa River at Long Quay, and is a leisurely stroll from the 15th century landmark Zuraw, known as "The Crane." Designers used native limestone, handmade bricks unique to Poland and other elements to produce a Hilton property that respects the rich culture and ancient surroundings of a great European city. The hotel offers 150 contemporary, luxurious bedrooms and suites. Guests are greeted with locally produced art in the lobby and public areas. In the hotel's central atrium, a magnificent glass artwork named 'Seaflowers' created by local artist Edyta Barańska is suspended from the atrium ceiling. The beautiful 'Seaflowers' chandelier features more than 25,000 individual glass flowers which are illuminated by fibre optics to create a dazzling effect.

The hotel's unique rooftop's 'urban beach' includes the highest rooftop bar in the city, a wellness centre, and roof deck with space for relaxing and enjoying superb views over Gdansk. The rooftop 'High Five' bar serves a range of cocktails, champagnes, beers and wines and the wellness centre features a signature Hilton Fitness by Precor gym, swimming pool and spa treatment rooms.

"Hilton Gdansk is Hilton Worldwide's second hotel in Poland and is yet another iconic addition to the Hilton Hotels brand in Europe," Simon Vincent, Area President of Europe for Hilton Worldwide, said. "With much emphasis being placed on the aesthetics of the hotel design, alongside the upscale full service that Hilton guests enjoy, we believe that Hilton Gdansk will prove to be a very popular and successful proposition in our portfolio of 187 hotels across Europe."

Synonymous with major historical events of the 20th Century, Gdansk has seen many European cultural influences throughout its history resulting in an array of beautiful architecture which make up the old city. Within minutes walking distance from Hilton Gdansk there are many sites of cultural interest including the magnificent medieval port crane, Hanseatic townhouses and grand squares, all joined together by picturesque cobbled streets.

"I am delighted that we can begin welcoming guests to our new Hilton hotel, in the heart of Gdansk," Jan Wojcikiewicz, Owner, Hilton Gdansk, said. "From the outset we aimed to create a hotel that not only provides an upscale and design led addition to the old city, but also acts as a link to some of the historical architecture of the city by using traditional materials and design. Now open, our hotel provides guests with world class Hilton service in the beautiful surroundings of Gdansk."

The hotel also features Mercato restaurant and bar, with outside terraces, offering locally inspired cuisine created with Mediterranean influences. The 42 seat restaurant is led by Chef Adam Wozniak, whose international experience and gastronomic expertise are reflected in the menu. Mercato's signature dish will be mirin glazed Kobe filet mignon, with potato fondant and saute saffron milk cap mushrooms. Guests can enjoy the metropolitan interiors with vibrant orange and green hues, or in the warmer months enjoy the large outdoor dining terraces over the Long Quay area of the river. Mercato also offers private dining for up to 22 guests.

Hilton Gdansk has the largest meeting and events capacity in town, which includes a multi functional conference space with maximum capacity of 530 guests. Hilton Gdansk is within easy reach of the city's airport, with direct flights to hubs across Europe, including London, Frankfurt, Copenhagen and Warsaw.
