Anthony S. Nieves Receives the J. Shipman Gold Medal Award

SVP - Supply Management for Hilton Worldwide Recognized for His Efforts in the Advancement of Purchasing and Supply Management

TEMPE, AZ - May 21, 2010 — Anthony S. Nieves, C.P.M., A.P.P., CFPM accepted his profession's highest honor at the Institute for Supply Management™'s (ISM) 95th Annual International Supply Management Conference and Educational Exhibit.

Nieves accepted the J. Shipman Gold Medal Award in San Diego, in recognition of modest, unselfish, sincere and persistent efforts for the advancement of supply management. In his acceptance speech, Nieves expressed his gratitude. "I am truly honored in receiving this award, he says. "I am able to receive this award because of the efforts and support by my family, my team members at Hilton Worldwide, the ISM staff and the many colleagues throughout the profession."

Nieves is senior vice president — supply management for Hilton Worldwide. Like Johnson Shipman, for whom the award is named, Nieves' "modest, unselfish, sincere and persistent efforts for the advancement of purchasing and supply management" are recognized and admired by ISM members and volunteers, colleagues at Hilton Worldwide and the larger business community.

Over his 26-year career in hotels/hospitality, Nieves has held increasingly responsible positions with Hilton Worldwide. Upon assuming his present position with Hilton in 1998, Nieves integrated the various supply management activities of the company into a consolidated discipline providing end-to-end supply management solutions. With the acquisition of Promus Hotel Corp. in 1999, Nieves successfully merged the two companies' supply management departments, renamed and repositioned the division to reflect more accurately the responsibilities and deliverables of the discipline, and restructured its business model to achieve more savings for the hotels and add more value to the company.

Nieves has held numerous volunteer leadership positions with several of ISM's affiliates, groups and forums. He is a founding committee member of ISM's Services Group and a founding/longtime member of ISM's Hospitality Supply Management Forum. Nieves served on the ISM Board of Directors for six years, including a two-year term as Board Chair from 2003 to 2005. Since June 2006, Nieves has served as chair of ISM's Non-Manufacturing Business Survey. In that role, he is responsible for providing the analysis of the ISM Non-Manufacturing Report On Business®, a leading indicator of the economy issued on the third business day of every month.

The J. Shipman Gold Medal Award was created by the Purchasing Management Association of New York in 1931 to honor Johnson Shipman, a pioneer in the profession.

As the largest supply management institute in the world, the mission of Institute for Supply Management™ (ISM) is to lead supply management. By executing and extending its mission through education, research, standards of excellence, influence building and information dissemination — including the renowned monthly ISM Report On Business® — ISM continues to extend the global impact of supply management. ISM is a not-for-profit membership association serving more than 40,000 supply management professionals in 75 countries. ISM offers credentialing to professionals around the world with the Certified Professional in Supply Management® (CPSM®) qualification. ISM is a member of the International Federation of Purchasing and Supply Management (IFPSM).
