Shifflet Appointed to the U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board

MARCH 4, 2010 - Douglas K. Shifflet, Chairman and CEO of D.K. Shifflet & Associates, has been appointed to the United States Travel and Tourism Advisory Board by Commerce Secretary Gary Locke.

The Advisory Board's major responsibility is to provide counsel to the Secretary on government policies and programs that affect the U.S. travel and tourism industry. The Board also provides a forum for discussing and proposing solutions to industry-related concerns.

“I am extremely pleased and thank Secretary Locke for my appointment. A major portion of my life has been focused on developing travel and tourism and I look forward to working with the Secretary and the Board” said Mr. Shifflet.

Mr. Shifflet has held national and international offices, participated in government, corporate and association task forces, and is active in management, marketing and marketing research organizations. He currently serves on the PATA Research Advisory Board for the Pacific Rim, works with OECD, Eurostat, ISI, the UNWTO and consults with national governments, several hotel chains and destination marketing groups worldwide.

Prior to founding D.K. Shifflet & Associates in 1982, he was Corporate Vice President of Marketing Services with the Marriott Corporation.
The United States Travel and Tourism Advisory Board represents a cross-section of the U.S. travel and tourism industry with appointees from financial services, transportation, hotel and restaurant businesses, and from many different geographic areas of the country.

The Secretaries of State, Homeland Security and Transportation also serve on the Board as ex officio, non-voting members. The new Board will serve from 2010 to 2011. The Department of Commerce will schedule the Board's inaugural meeting in the coming weeks.
