Cuixmala, A Luxury Mexican Retreat In An Ecological Setting Joins The Mason Rose Portfolio

. October 14, 2008

MEXICO, June 15, 2005. Cuixmala, the family estate created by billionaire and philanthropist Sir James Goldsmith, has joined Mason Rose.

Located two and half hours from Puerto Vallarta airport in the Jalisco region of Mexico or fifty minutes from Manzanillo Airport, Cuixmala offers a unique experience for those seeking the ultimate in privacy and luxury. Set along a 3km beach, the 25,000 acre property offers four fully staffed houses ranging in size from three to 11 bedrooms and a further nine casitas ranging from one to three bedrooms with shared pool and clubhouse.

A combination of styles, Mexican, Mediterranean and Moorish characterise the design and architecture of the four main houses and nine casitas. Painted in typical Mexican colours providing a contrast with the lush tropical gardens, the houses offer the unique experience of luxurious living within magnificent spaces furnished and decorated with Mexican and Indian furnishings. At the pinnacle is Casa La Loma, a bright, airy villa with seven satellite bungalows overlooking the sea and inspired by the St. Sophia Mosque in Istanbul. All of the houses are designed to blend light and colour with matchless space, orientation and panoramas of the beach, ocean, river and lagoons.

Sir James Goldsmith created the retreat 18 years ago from a vision he had for an idyllic escape inspired by the natural beauty of the surroundings at harmony with the land and the landscape. The criteria was simple: fresh air, clean water, organic food, serenity, security and privacy.

From that vision he built a series of houses for his children and their families, sizeable in proportion and design but comfortable and unpretentious in spirit. The surrounding land was transformed into an ecological preserve, setting up The Chamela-Cuixmala biosphere reserve to protect the coast from development and to maintain its natural beauty and biodiversity. There are 140 different species of mamals, 270 species of birds and 1200 vascular plants. The estate opened its doors to the public 3 years ago and is now run by Sir James' daughter Alix and her husband Goffredo Marcaccini.

In keeping with Sir James' vision, all food is grown and processed organically: the meats, the dairy products, fruits and vegetables, honey and the coffee all come either from the ranch or the highland farm and the property provides opportunities for guests to encounter coati mundis, wild boars, zebras, jaguars, ocelots, elands and gazelles.

Cuixmala has maintained the spirit in which it was conceived - that of being in someone's beloved, private home.
