Contemporary Hawaiian D'ecor, Artwork & Amenities Are Hallmark of Milestone Makeover Design at L

HONOLULU, HI, June 15, 2008. Kahala Chic is the new design signature of The Kahala Hotel & Resort, evident in the first phase of completed guestroom makeovers at the legendary resort. New furnishings, windows, curtains, carpets, wood floors, amenities and Hawaiian themed artwork in guestrooms and suites enhance the experience of tropical seclusion that the hotel offers at the end of prestigious Kahala Avenue.

"We're very excited to share our new look. Inspired by our tropical island setting and our 'Gold Coast' address, we asked our design team for a fresh concept that would complement the addition of the most up-to-date contemporary comforts," said John Blanco, managing director of The Kahala Hotel & Resort. "The result is Kahala Chic. We're certain guests will be pleased, and will look forward to more exciting enhancements as we continue to make upgrades to the property in the coming year."

The resort's Diamond Head and Koko Head guestrooms and suites now take on an island-style chic created by interior designers Avery Brooks & Associates, with distinctive guest amenities. Each room has a contemporary design with an open and airy tropical feel, reflecting the elegant island lifestyle so richly enjoyed in residential Kahala.

The suites and guestrooms feature rich ivory and coffee color tones with tropical style ceiling fans, four-poster or double-poster beds, and tropical accents such as window-boxed framed nautilus shells, ruffle-edged mirrors and distinctively painted bedside dressers. Guestrooms are also richly decorated with hibiscus wall-to-wall carpeting, while the suites have Ipe (Brazilian walnut) wood flooring and hand-woven dhurrie rugs in tropical flower patterns. Windows facing south provide a framed view of Koko Head Crater.

Striking retro art adorns the walls of the new rooms. Works by artists John Melville Kelly, who has been compared to Gauguin for his depictions of Polynesians, and Paul Jacoulet, who is known for his striking portraits of Asian and South Sea natives, are woven seamlessly into the tropical d'ecor.

Throughout the corridors are oil and acrylic paintings by artists Saim Caglayan, a Kaua'i resident who was born in Istanbul and came to the United States in 1968 to paint landscapes, coastlines and the Hawaiian islands; Thomas Van Stein, a Santa Barbara artist whose forte is nightscapes; and John Wisnosky, a well-collected artist and former chairman of the University of Hawai'i art department. Displayed in showcases on each floor landing are antique Ni'ihau shell lei; Ivory Pikake lei; traditional feather lei; pieces by master scale model Hawaiian canoe builder Francis Pimmel; a Koa Shrine Ukulele by Lyon & Healy; and a rare Deluxe Echo Ukulele.

State-of-the-art technology adds to the features of each suite and guest room, including high-speed wireless Internet service, Sony 40-inch flat screen LCD television, Sony iPod alarm clock radio and cordless phones. Suites also include a Sony home theatre system and deluxe espresso machine.

Custom-made 310-thread count Egyptian cotton Italian Frette linens, embroidered with tropical island flowers, Frette towels, and plush chenille robes are added for exceptional comfort. Rain showerheads are in all showers and Toto brand washlets are also part of the new suite additions.

The Kahala now offers the custom signature fragrance line by Floris of London, purveyor of superior quality products and distinct fragrances since the 1730s. This exclusively crafted line includes Luxury Shampoo and Shine Boosting Conditioner, Luxury Soap, Moisturizing Bath & Shower Gel and Enriched Body Moisturizer.

The next phase of renovation will begin in 2008 with the Dolphin Lagoon wing. Plans are also being finalized for the public areas that will include a combined spa and CHI fitness center, upgrades to the lobby and to the Plumeria Beach House restaurant.
