WA's Best Recognised at National Tourism Awards

. October 14, 2008

MARCH 1, 2008. Tourism Minister Sheila McHale has congratulated two Western Australian tourism businesses for winning a prestigious 2007 Qantas Australian Tourism Award, held in Canberra last night.

Ms McHale said the Augusta-Margaret River Association and Faraway Bay were recognised for their excellence and represented the best of what WA's industry had to offer.

"The Augusta-Margaret River Association was rewarded in the category of Visitor Information Services for its commitment to delivering a positive and memorable experience to visitors," she said.

"I commend the association for its efforts in providing innovative services and maximising the holiday experience for visitors to WA."

The Minister said Faraway Bay, on the State's remote and spectacular Kimberley coastline, was honoured in the Unique Accommodation category for its secluded cliff-top cabins.

"Congratulations go to Faraway Bay's bush hide-away which offers visitors a distinctive experience and leads the way with its sound environmental practices," she said.

"Our winners could not have come from two more different parts of the State, which goes to show the rich diversity of WA's tourism experiences. Success in these categories demonstrates WA's commitment to customer service is strong and our extraordinary destinations and products are some of the nation's best."

Ms McHale said tourism was a key economic driver for WA, delivering $5.7billion into the economy in 2005-06 and employing 63,000 people.
