GM of Zion Ponderosa Ranch Set to Complete Reenactment of Pioneer Saga
SPRINGVILLE, UT, September 27, 2006. Michael Kane will finish the reenactment of the historic trek made by pioneer William Manly from Green River, Wyoming, through Green River, Utah, up to Springville, Utah. At the end of the journey tomorrow, Mr. Kane and his team will have traveled 45 days, over 180 miles on foot and 450 miles in a pontoon boat.
Mr. Kane is excited to bring his newfound knowledge and appreciation for early pioneers back to Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort. The completion of his trek will also signify the completion of his Ph.D. in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism from the University of Utah; valuable training that will give him an edge in organizing the resort's many adventure trips.
'It speaks a lot about the owners of Zion Ponderosa, to allow me to go for a month and a half to complete my educational quest. This dedication to education of employees makes the resort a better resort,' stated Michael Kane, general manager of Zion Ponderosa Ranch Resort and leader of the reenactment. 'Manly was the first person to run the 450 miles of water on the Green River; this was 20 years before Powell. It is significant what he accomplished. I have a sense of appreciation for his will to survive. History is a valiant teacher for us all.'
William Manly is a famous immigrant from the mid-nineteenth century. His informative memoirs give detailed descriptions of his journey, which included not only conquering the Green River but also surviving a trek through Death Valley. It is from Manly's record of the comments of one of the pioneers that the term 'Death Valley' was coined.
Michael Kane was able to reenact the journey from Wyoming to Utah, including a meeting 157 years ago between Manly and Chief Wakara, chief of all the Ute lands. In later years, Manly attributes Chief Wakara with saving his life by pointing the party in the right direction and giving the group two horses.
A reception for Mr. Kane and his team will be held to celebrate the completion of the reenactment on Wednesday, September 27, at 5:00 pm at the Academy at Canyon Creek, located at 763 North, 1650 West, in Springville, Utah.
