Cap Maison Unveils The Naked Fisherman Beach Bar & Grill

. November 21, 2013

Cap Estate, Saint Lucia - November 21, 2013 - Cap Maison, the acclaimed five-star beachfront resort on the northwest shore of Saint Lucia, has just opened The Naked Fisherman Beach Bar & Grill. Set on sandy Smuggler's Cove, the resort's secluded beach, The Naked Fisherman and is one of the few true beach eateries in Saint Lucia, a mountainous island with a rocky coastline. The Naked Fisherman was created by Cap Maison's Executive Chef Craig Jones, the Welsh-born veteran of Europe's Michelin-starred kitchens who has been at the helm of the resort's Cliff at Cap restaurant since it opened in 2008. In the past year, Chef Jones has created the island's first Pop Up dinners, choosing locations as disparate as an 18th century fort on Pigeon Island and the tall ship Brig Unicorn, used in Pirates of the Caribbean. Just last month, he followed up with a two-night stint at Manhattan's trendy City Grit culinary salon, the first Caribbean chef to do so. Now he's created The Naked Fisherman, a modern take on the classic Caribbean beach shack, where sand in the toes and a rum punch in hand are the way to go.

The Naked Fisherman Beach Bar & Grill

With a soundtrack of crashing surf and vibrant Caribbean music, The Naked Fisherman offers a casual dining alternative for guests of Cap Maison and is open to the public, with menu items at a gentler price point than the white tablecloth Cliff at Cap. While the resort is famed for its Spanish Mediterranean style architecture, the look of the 36-seat Naked Fisherman is thatched-roof-Caribbean, the better to harmonize with its lush beach setting. As for the Naked Fisherman name, when Saint Lucian fishermen come in to the shore along Cap Maison in their skiffs in the early morning, many of them are prefer to fish in the traditional manner -- stark naked - as they dive for fish. The New York Times noted this in their review of Cap Maison in 2009, saying that "at breakfast, we watched as a crew of men, several naked, rode in on a small skiff. Just shy of the bar on the rocks, they cut the engine and dropped a net into the water. They dove in, dragged the net into a wide horseshoe, and then swam toward it to direct the fish to capture."

Saint Lucia's legendary naked fishermen are now celebrated at this beach-front eatery, where Chef Jones has designed a grill-centric menu for both lunch and dinner, with an emphasis on barbecue and fresh seafood. Grilled island catch with pumpkin and coconut curry or grilled spiny lobster tail with ital rice are on offer, while carnivores can order sticky pulled baby back ribs or a grilled Wagyu burger. Drinks are very much on tap at The Naked Fisherman, with a wide selection of rums, wines, cocktails, cold beers and the signature - and potent -- rum punch.

The Naked Fisherman Beach Bar & Grill is open from 12:30pm to 3pm for lunch and from 6:30pm to 10pm for dinner.

Chef's Table Dinners at Saman House

Chef Jones inaugurates yet another style of dining at Cap Maison on December 4, when he begins a weekly series of Chef's Table Dinners at Saman House, the owner's house adjacent to Cap Maison. The Chef's Table Dinners, limited to just 24 diners, will present an intimate five-course meal on Saman House's broad verandah as the sun sets over the Caribbean. Scheduled for every Wednesday throughout the winter season, guests will gather at 7PM in the kitchen of Saman House for cocktails and conversation with Chef Jones before heading out to the verandah for the five-course meal with course-by-course wine pairings.

Chef's Table Dinners at Saman House, every Wednesday evening at 7pm. The five-course menu includes wine pairings. The cost is $150 U.S. per person and reservations are required.

Cap Maison, set on a stunning four-acre, cliff-top parcel of land just minutes north of popular Rodney Bay, features 50 artfully appointed suites and guest rooms. Cliff at Cap, the resort's signature restaurant with breathtaking panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, is where Executive Chef Craig Jones serves a French West Indian-inspired contemporary menu based on fresh local products and seafood. In 2013, it earned its first Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. The resort features a 2,000 square foot serene spa with an adjacent garden that provides herbs for signature indigenous treatments.
