AH&LA Establishes Scholarship to Honor Joe McInerney

More than $150,000 will Help Future Lodging Students

. April 30, 2013

Washington - April 30, 2013 - The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AH&LA) announced the creation of an endowed scholarship in the name of Joe McInerney, AH&LA's former past president/CEO, in recognition of his leadership and his support for hospitality schools and students throughout the United States. The scholarship was officially announced during a special reception held in conjunction with the AH&LA Legislative Action Summit, at which time all donors were recognized and the total raised - $150,000 - was announced.

Tom Hewitt, chairman of the board of Interstate Hotels & Resorts, and John Russell, president of CampusBrands, led the fundraising effort. American Express, a long-time AH&LA allied member, generously kicked-off the effort by contributing $25,000 in matching funds. The scholarship is being administered by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF).

“Joe regularly speaks at hospitality schools and mentors dozens of students across the country and around the world,” said Hewitt. “John and I were thrilled at the industry support, which was a true testament to the impact Joe has made on so many people throughout his career. Hospitality students for many years will carry the proud designation of McInerney scholars.”
