Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina Honored with Recycler of the Year
20th Annual Waste Reduction and Recycling Awards Recognize the Sheraton's Ongoing Commitment to Sustainability
SAN DIEGO, CA - May 2, 2012 - The bayfront Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina was the proud recipient of the San Diego Environmental Services Department's (ESD) “Recycler of the Year” nod at the 20th Annual Waste Reduction and Recycling Awards on April 12, 2012. Recognized for the success of the hotel's new food composting and recycling program that turns more than 250 tons of organic waste into compost annually, the Sheraton was one of only three hotels in San Diego recognized for its efforts.
Each year, the ESD selects organizations and businesses that have adopted innovative waste reduction and/or recycling programs that go above and beyond and make a significant impact on reducing San Diego's carbon footprint. This year, 32 local companies were awarded this honor that was presented by San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders.
“The Sheraton San Diego has been a longtime leader and innovator of eco-friendly hotel practices,” said Scott Hermes, General Manager of the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. “The implementation of our comprehensive food composting and recycling program is just one of many steps we're taking to achieve our long-term goal of operating as a zero waste facility and within less than a year, we're already operating at a 90% diversion rate. Being recognized as a Recycler of the Year only elevates our sense of pride and encourages us to continue doing what we're doing.“
The recycling program, which was implemented in August 2011, diverts almost 100 percent of the hotels food and waste and captures the majority of recyclable products from the Sheraton San Diego's waste stream, which ultimately displaces hundreds of tons of food from landfills. In addition, Sheraton San Diego also uses Fuel Cell Power Technology to provide the hotel its energy, energy efficient lighting system, water conserving fixtures, climate control systems and more.
