. September 23, 2010

ISLAMORADA, FLORIDA KEYS, FL - September 21, 2010 - Cheeca Lodge & Spa owner Jerry Johnson is pleased to announce the return of Herbert Spiegel as general manager of one of Florida's most famed resorts. Spiegel is a veteran hotelier, whose early training took place at The Dorchester in London and The Pierre in New York. Post Cornell University of Hotel Administration, Spiegel soon became General Manager of Le Mondrian in Los Angeles, The Highland's Inn in Carmel, California as well as The Reach in Key West, Florida. From there he started his long association with Cheeca Lodge, which he reopened after extensive renovations in 1988 as General Manager, a position he held until 2000 and during which time he founded the George Bush/Cheeca Lodge Bonefish Tournament. Senior Executive Vice President positions followed, supervising large portfolios of hotels and resorts counting Cheeca Lodge among them in several instances.

Spiegel's motto for success is simple: “Surround yourself with the best people and give them training and support to make things happen. A perfect guest experience is our ongoing mission,” Spiegel added. The affection for the resort and the location runs deep within all members of the Spiegel family who are delighted to have moved back to The Keys and who have stayed involved with the community throughout the years. In fact, Spiegel met his wife Kimberly in Key West and got married at Cheeca Lodge in 1989.

Spiegel is relentless in his desire to create the finest resort experience for Cheeca Lodge & Spa members and guests, accompanied by warm and genuine hospitality and expert service levels. “We cater to the discerning traveler, who returns year after year to our resort, and also to our loyal membership community of friends and family. We provide flawless service and a memorable experience for each and every guest,” stated Spiegel.

Reopened on December 15, 2009, Cheek is designed with its original porte-cochere entrance, classic Florida Keys architecture, chic West Indies decor, and a spirited tradition of “barefoot elegance” -- a term coined at Cheek. True to Cheek Lodge's tradition of environmental preservation, the Main Lodge was built to LEED specifications of the Green Building Council.

Cheek's culinary offerings include two distinctive restaurants - Nikkei Sushi Bar offering the Florida Keys' freshest sushi, Asian-inspired fare and a unique selection of Japanese sake and wine, and Atlantic's Edge with a seasonal fine-dining menu of fresh local seafood, prime steaks and organic local produce. The resort's signature features - classic 525' wooden fishing pier, tropical gardens, crossing palms archway, saltwater snorkeling lagoon, nature trails, Tahitian-style Spa Lagoon, spectacular purple sunsets, secluded white sand beaches, Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course, Camp Cheek children's environmental activity program, and access to world-class sport fishing -remain unchanged. An expanded roster of activities includes on-property flats boats with seasoned local guides for backcountry fishing, sightseeing, eco-tours, kite boarding, and a junior angler program for teens. The unique setting, tradition of laid-back elegance, and reputation as an exclusive hideaway has drawn everyone from past presidents and sports heroes to Kevin Costner and Selma Hayek.
