Leela Chairman Receives India's Highest Civilian Honor

Exceptional Service of Capt. C.P. Krishnan Nair Recognized

MUMBAI, India - May 12, 2010 - Capt. C.P. Krishnan Nair, Chairman of The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's highest civilian honor by Hon'ble President of India, Smt. Pratibha Patil in a glittering ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Presidential Palace in New Delhi on March 31.

Established in 1954, the Padma Bhushan Award is the highest civilian decoration conferred by India's President to recognize distinguished and exceptional services of the highest order to the nation from all professional fields.

Capt. Nair began his career in the textile business developing India's handloom industry and helped to create the All Indian Handloom Board. In the late 1950s he was instrumental in introducing “bleeding madras” fabric to the U.S met with spectacular success.

Since opening his first hotel in 1987 in Mumbai, Capt. Nair has built The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts into a luxury brand to be reckoned with.
