Andrew Harper Names The Alpina Gstaad a 2014 Grand Award Winner

Newest Luxury Hotel in Gstaad Recognized for Relaxing Atmosphere and Dedication to Personal Service

. February 05, 2014

GSTAAD, Switzerland - February 4, 2014 - The newest luxury hotel to open in 100 years in this Swiss Alpine village continues to draw rave reviews. In yet another prestigious recognition for The Alpina Gstaad, Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report - one of the most respected publications in the travel industry - has chosen the luxury property as one of six Grand Award winners in Europe.

Each year, the editors of Andrew Harper recall their travel experiences over the past 12 months and single out a number of particularly memorable hotels and resorts. To be considered for the annual awards, properties must be relatively small in size, possess strong individual personalities, offer relaxing atmospheres and demonstrate a consistent devotion to personal service. Hotels and resorts have been recognized in the categories of Grand Awards, Hideaway of the Year and Special Recognition Awards, which include several people of note.

"We are very honored that the editors at Andrew Harper chose to recognize our hotel," said Managing Director Eric Favre. "The subscribers of The Hideaway Report are some of the most discerning travelers in the world and we will look forward to welcoming them with warm Alpine hospitality."

The Alpina Gstaad is a contemporary interpretation of traditional Swiss architecture incorporating authentic local materials and time-honored Alpine style. Massive blocks of Ringgenberg limestone, the rich brown stone from local quarries, have been hand carved for the entrance and ground floor. Hundred-year-old fir wood, gathered from centuries-old Alpine farm houses, decorates the façade and lines the walls of the public rooms. The gabled roof, embellished with dormers and peaks, is of natural slate.

The Alpina Gstaad joins five luxury properties in Europe as a Grand Award winner:
• Alpine Conservatorium, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
• Domaine des Hauts de Loire, Loire Valley, France
• Grand Hotel Tremezzi, Lake Como, Italy
• Schloss Elmau, Bavaria, Germany
• Vigilius, the Dolomites, Italy

The Alpina Gstaad has made Conde Nast Traveler's "Hot List," Travel + Leisure's "It List" and The Robb Report's "Best of the Best" for 2013. Schweizer SonntagsZeitung (the Swiss Sunday Newspaper) called The Alpina Gstaad one of the “Top Ten” best holiday hotels in Switzerland, and Gault Millau Swiss named The Alpina Gstaad “Hotel of the Year 2013.” The Alpina Gstaad is a member of Virtuoso and Preferred Hotels and Resorts. In November 2013, the hotel won European Design Hotel of the Year from the European Hotel Design Awards and was a finalist in Virtuoso's "Best of the Best" awards for excellence in design. Also in November, Restaurant Sommet was awarded its first Michelin star.
