Xanterra Completes Extensive Renovations of Thunderbird and Kachina Lodges
Located on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona
GRAND CANYON, AZ - May 29, 2012 - Thunderbird and Kachina Lodges, located on the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park reopened April 1 after completing an extensive renovation. The lodges closed Jan. 2, 2012 for renovations of guest rooms, meeting rooms and common areas.
Kachina and Thunderbird Lodges are properties of similar design with the same room types on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The lodges feature a total of 104 rooms and are located directly on the rim of the canyon where guests are just steps from the rim trail. They are also located near two other rim hotels - El Tovar and Bright Angel Lodge - as well as restaurants, shops and historic structures of Grand Canyon Village.
Both lodges feature rooms with either two queen beds or one king bed as well as in-room single-serving coffee brewer, refrigerator, safe, television, telephone, and full bath. Kachina Lodge has two rooms designed for guests with physical disabilities, and Thunderbird Lodge has three ADA-compliant rooms.
Enhancements to the guest rooms included replacement of selected exterior guest room doors; redesign of closet space to include shelving and doors to accommodate the in-room safe and coffee pot setups, irons, ironing boards and luggage racks; installation of wall-mounted lighting; new paint; new wall photographs; new carpeting and pads; refurbished furniture with granite tops; a variety of soft goods; flat screen televisions in all rooms and general maintenance in bathrooms.
Public spaces feature new furnishings, doors, carpet, lighting and artwork, and bathrooms were repaired and upgraded. Meeting rooms and exteriors were upgraded as well.
Xanterra South Rim L.L.C.*, operator of lodges, restaurants and activities in Grand Canyon National Park, oversaw the project. Xanterra also operates a variety of interpretive motorcoach tours, restaurants, gift shops and mule rides.
