A Family Vacation for Mom Too

May 7, 2010 - Family vacations are often filled with fun and excitement for kids, but what about mom? After spending months planning where to go and what to do, many times moms get left out. The family vacation turns into a business trip for her; constantly concerned about where to eat and how to entertain everyone while keeping them safe. The perfect vacation solution: a dude ranch. The Dude Ranchers' Association is a collection of a hundred plus ranches focused in the western United States that have met strict guidelines in areas such as accommodations, customer service and honesty. Below are three samples of what a dude ranch can offer the whole family!

Giving mom more time to relax, many of the ranches provide day camps for the kids. Wind Walker Guest Ranch in Utah offers all-inclusive packages which include their kid connection program. This program encourages connecting with and learning from nature with activities such as: nature hikes where kids will be taught about wild edible plants, building and racing Huck Finn style rafts and sky-gazing and constellation exploration at night.

While the kids are safely occupied mom can slow down with the nature spa through group mediation or chakra realignment. She can continue communing with Mother Nature by taking a guided history tour of the trails once trekked by the Paiute Native Americans while dad hops on a mountain bike and navigates Skyline Trail.

As the kids are swimming or riding trails in the Caballeros Kid's Program, mom and dad can spend the day together at Rancho de los Caballeros. For an active start to the day they can discover desert wonders during a guided jeep tour or tee off at the award winning golf course. For some pampering, the Spa at los Caballeros has services ranging from reiki and hohokam massage to the ranch hand manicure and purification ritual wrap. After inhaling soothing essential oils and submitting to complete relaxation, mom and dad can rekindle the romance in the evening; listening to the sultry sounds of classical Spanish guitar and sipping glasses of wine from the ranch's extensive wine list.

At C Lazy U Ranch kids can join in the excitement at day camps or the family can stay together for a day of horseback riding- lessons included. Katie the pony is on hand for the 3-5 crowd while the rest of the family is paired with one of the ranch's 175 horses. After a day practicing for the shodeo in the ring or trail riding the nearby mountains the family should get ready for a new approach to camping. Following dinner they travel to pre-constructed luxury tents complete with comfy beds, fire pits and s'mores kits for a bonding experience the whole family will remember for years to come.

Regardless of the ranch or program everyone can reconnect over a gourmet dinner, maybe a cookout, and exchange stories of the day's adventures.
