San Francisco Scores Highest in the United States in Conde Nast Traveler's 2005 Readers' Choice Awar

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, October 19, 2005. San Francisco received the highest score of any city in the United States in Cond'e Nast Traveler's annual Readers' Choice Awards, published in the November 2005 issue. This is the 17th of 18 years and the 13th consecutive year that San Francisco has scored the highest in the poll's "Top Ten US Cities" category.

San Francisco received the second highest score (86.8) for any city in the world, second only to Sydney, Australia (88.8). The next closest city was Florence, Italy (86.0). Tabulated from 27,957 votes by Cond'e Nast Traveler's readers, the award was presented to Mark Theis, vice president- conventions of the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau during a ceremony at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In the category of "Top Ten US Cities," San Francisco beat its own score from last year of 86.6 and easily surpassed the next rated U.S. cities, Santa Fe, N.M. (83.7), Charleston, S.C. (83.0) and New York City (82.7). The other California city to score in the top ten was Carmel (78.0). Each city was judged according to specific criteria such as ambiance, friendliness, culture/sites, restaurants, lodging and shopping. San Francisco scored highest of any US city in the restaurants category, receiving 95.2. New York scored 94.4 and New Orleans scored 93.4.

Four San Francisco hotels made the list of the Top 75 United States Hotels:

The Four Seasons (92.7); the Ritz-Carlton (92.4); Campton Place (90.3) and the Mandarin Oriental (90.3).

The Cond'e Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards are the highest honors in the travel industry, celebrating the best-of-the-best hotels, airlines, resorts, cruise lines, cities, rental car companies and islands as voted by the Cond'e Nast Traveler's dedicated readers.
