Gleneagles Hotel Recognized for Environmental Excellence
Winning the Sustainable Business Award Honoring More Than a Decade of Efforts
Edinburgh, Scotland - June 23, 2010 - The award-winning Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire, Scotland has added yet another honor to their impressive list of accolades, receiving the Sustainable Business Award in recognition of its efforts to neutralize or reduce the hotel's impact on the environment. The prestigious award was presented to the AA Five Red Star resort earlier this month at the Catering in Scotland Excellence Awards in Glasgow, an event that distinguishes the most talented individuals and organizations for their contribution to the Scottish catering and hospitality industry.
Gleneagles' Risk and Safety Manager Fiona Smith, who collected the award on behalf of the resort, commented that they “are delighted to receive this industry recognition for our efforts so far and will continue to strive to do all [they] can as a business to protect the environment for future generations.” A pioneer of environmentally conscious reform in the hotel industry, Gleneagles began revamping their practices in the late 1990s with aims based on five cornerstones: waste, energy and supplier management, their guests and their team members. Since then, they have employed irrigation systems on three of their championship golf courses and used a wood chip biomass boiler to generate heat and hot water - to name a few of their efforts.
Other recognitions for their efforts include winning the pan European Award of Environmental Excellence in 2001, in honour of the good practices being carried out throughout the 850-acre estate; in 2008, becoming the first UK hotel to achieve a gold award in the Green Tourism Business Scheme; and receiving a Commendation award at the Vision in Business Environmental Scotland (VIBES) Awards and The Golf Environment Europe award later that same year. The resort plans to continue improving their impact by educating others both in and outside the hotel industry of the importance of going green.
