University of Nevada, Singapore Campus Marks Official Opening

SINGAPORE, August 2, 2006. Today marked the official opening of University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) first international campus for William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration in Singapore. Guest of Honor Dr. Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Manpower, joined Patricia L Herbold, US Ambassador to the Republic of Singapore, Dr. Stavros Anthony, Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents, Dr. David B. Ashley, President of UNLV, Dr. Stuart Mann, Dean of William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration, UNLV, and Dr. Andy Nazarechuk, Dean of UNLV Singapore Campus to officially unveil new premises in true Singapore style with a ribbon cutting ceremony followed by a lion dance performance and rolling out of pineapples and oranges.

Dr. Andy Nazarechuk, Dean of University of Nevada Las Vegas - Singapore Campus said "Today, with the opening of our first international campus in Singapore, we look forward to playing a significant role in bringing a world class hospitality education closer to students in Singapore and Asia." He added, "UNLV Singapore Campus is designed to feature the latest technology in hospitality education to provide our students with an innovative student learning environment".

UNLV's William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration's 12,000 square foot campus is prominently located in the heart of Singapore's growing educational hub, on the 10th and 11th floors of The National Library Building. The campus project commenced 21 months ago and features a modern and contextual design. The facilities are tailored individually to the Undergraduate and Executive Masters courses needs.

UNLV President David Ashley considers Singapore an ideal setting for the college's first international campus. "Singapore is a wonderful location for UNLV's campus," he said. "It's a place that is thriving, and support for tourism there is second to none. It's a very high-quality place with demanding expectations; UNLV students should really blossom in that environment."

Dr. Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Manpower said at the opening ceremony, "Singapore's strategy to build a broad range of top Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) is taking shape. Today, we have internationally recognised course offerings ranging from digital animation, arts and fashion, culinary arts, to luxury brand management and hospitality." He also added, "UNLV Singapore will add to this menu of choices for students."

The courses offered at UNLV Singapore are expected to add to the options available for students who wish to join the tourism industry. UNLV Singapore offers bachelor's degree programs in hotel administration and hospitality management as well as an executive master's degree in hospitality administration and it expects to enroll for its first intake approximately 70 - 80 students.
