Rosarito Beach Hotel Building Condo-hotel
A few Miles South of the U.S. Mexico Border
ROSARITO BEACH, Mexico, November 20, 2006. Groundbreaking is scheduled at noon this Friday (Nov. 24) for the first branded condo-hotel along Baja's Gold Coast, a 271-unit 17-story complex which will be part of the world famous Rosarito Beach Hotel.
Many dignitaries are expected to attend the ceremony marking the start of construction on the project, which is scheduled for completion in March of 2008.
"The project is a major step in the ongoing development of the resort," said Hugo Torres Chabert, owner of the Rosarito Beach Hotel, which celebrated its 80th anniversary last year.
The project also is a major step in the continued development of the region, just a few miles south of the U.S. Mexico border. It has become one of the most popular areas in the world for Americans looking for a vacation, retirement home, or investment property. As many as 60 oceanfront developments with thousands of units are under construction along the 60 miles from the U.S. border to Ensenada.
Recently, U.S. real estate mogul Donald Trump announced plans to build a 500-unit project bearing his name about eight miles north of the Rosarito Beach Hotel project.
The new Rosarito condo-hotel project will replace 40 garden rooms and will provide an additional luxurious option to hotel guests. Those who buy the units have the option of living there full time or having the hotel rent out their unit when they are not using it.
Owners can take full advantage of all hotel amenities, including maid and room service, gourmet restaurant and European spa. "You can go away to your vacation home and really be pampered," said Laura Torres, vice president of the hotel.
The Rosarito Beach Condo Hotel has been designed by Hermosillo Associados, Baja's largest architecture and construction company, and Eduardo Junco, one of Mexico's leading architects. said project director Somit Talwar.
The project is designed in a Spanish colonial/mission style that will blend with the hotel. It includes 192 one-bedroom, 65 two-bedroom and 14 penthouse units. Each is fully furnished in modern Mexican style, and includes flat-screen televisions. Prices start in the mid-$100,000s and go up to mid-$500,000s for the penthouses.
The 230-room Rosarito Beach Hotel, initially the luxurious home of the founding family, opened to the public in 1925 as a hunting lodge on a beautiful stretch of sandy beach, with 12 rooms and one lavatory. It flourished during the 30's when Hollywood stars, European royalty and Mexican presidents mingled by its famed pool and Beachcomber Bar.
History of the Rosarito Beach Hotel
Rosarito in the Beginning
In 1929 Manuel P. Barbachano, a native of Chihuahua, acquired a small sportsman?s lodge in the scenic coastline of northern Baja. The lodge, built in 1925, had only eight rooms, and two baths with beautiful views. Mr. Barbachano enhanced the edifice and designed the hotel?s main adobe building that would become an ornate lobby with 20-foot high ceilings, and beautiful murals.
Mr. Barbachano continued to enlarge the colonial-style hotel in a manner that emphasized gracious Mexican living that was also appealing to its ever expanding clientele of foreign guests. Special murals were commissioned for the lobby and replicas of the most important Aztec and Mayan art were added throughout the hotel so every visitor would have a real taste of Mexico
The hotel quickly represented the ideal exotic, romantic escape and became popular with many famous names. Included were such Hollywood legends as Burgess Meredith and Paulette Goddard, who were married and honeymooned at the hotel, Orson Wells, Lana Turner, Mickey Rooney, Victor Mature and Rita Hayworth.
From the Past to the Future
Even during World War II and through the post-war years the popularity of the hotel continued to grow. The Hotel hosted several royalty and heads of state as guests of the property among which was Ali Khan (son of the Shah of Iran) in 1953 and several Mexican Presidents.
The history of the Rosarito Beach Hotel has shaped the growth of the west of Baja California, and the original Barbachano dream has become a world famous and family oriented resort.
Since then, it has grown into a full-service resort whose guests have included Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra. The hotel features a European Spa, gourmet and casual restaurants, oceanfront bars, sport facilities, concierge, room service, botanical garden, wireless internet, and oceanfront suites and rooms with breathtaking views.
Being in the center of town, the Rosarito Beach Hotel offers owners and guests alike the freedom to enjoy Mexican hospitality, exploring shops, art galleries, fine restaurants, markets, horseback riding tours -- all within a few blocks.
The Rosarito Beach Hotel and Condo Hotel is just 20 miles south of the U.S./San Diego border, along an idyllic oceanfront highway.
