LXR Concludes Refurbishment of Boca Raton Resort & Club

Expects to Join Waldorf=Astoria Collection in 2009

BOCA RATON, FL, October 7, 2008. LXR Luxury Resorts & Hotels has announced that the legendary Boca Raton Resort & Club (http://www.BocaResort.com), originally built in 1926 by architect Addison Mizner, has concluded a 220-million dollar refurbishment once again defining the resort guest experience for the 21st century.

Throughout the last year, the 1,047 room Boca Raton Resort & Club has completed a series of enhancements and transformations that took place in phases and touched all areas of the property including new public spaces, notable restaurants, and renovated and refurbished guest rooms. The resort’s evolution coincides with plans for the Resort & Club to join the Waldorf=Astoria Collection, a process anticipated for completion in early 2009.

Drawing from Mizner’s original philosophy and vision, an ensemble of world-renowned designers led the efforts in creating a fresh new look and feel to the legendary resort. Extensive resort renovations include public spaces by Thierry Despont, remodeled Bungalows by Alexandra Champalimaud, an entirely redesigned Boca Beach Club conceptualized by Fiona Thompson and culinary additions including Morimoto, also designed by Despont; Serendipity and the Family Room designed by Jose Gonzalez Architects; Old Homestead Steak House designed by Tony Chi; and Cielo by Angela Hartnett, designed by Bentel & Bentel.

With the completion of the Palm Court in Spring 2008, the resort’s highly anticipated and recently renovated public area, and the newly designed lobby, French artist-architect Thierry Despont has created a “return to casual life in an elegant environment” drawing on Mizner’s DNA. With the modern and contemporary feel of an Italian piazza, the Palm Court presents a spectacular ceiling comprised of a transparent Texlon ETFE Foil, giving the illusion of a glass canopy designed to capture an abundance of natural light. The foil, also used in the construction of the 2008 Olympic Games’ National Aquatic Centre in Beijing, possesses green ecological characteristics and is made from recyclable materials, creates low energy consumption and recycles rain water back into Lake Boca. The Palm Court culminates Despont’s profound reinterpretation of Mizner’s original lobby which now runs the length of the hotel from the West Walkway east to the resort’s full-service marina.

Premiering in Fall 2008 are the culinary offerings of Masaharu Morimoto of Iron Chef fame, who will open the first Southeastern outpost of Morimoto sushi bar at the resort, and the first Serendipity ice cream café outside of New York City, known for its decadent ice cream confections and “frrrozen” drinks. Boca Raton Resort & Club is also home to Old Homestead Steak House and Cielo by Angela Hartnett, London’s famed Michelin-starred chef and Gordon Ramsay partner, who opened her first U.S. restaurant at the resort in February 2007.

Set to open in December 2008 is the entirely redesigned 212-room Boca Beach Club, located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway, across from the main resort, combining a strong European influence with the style and spirit of South Florida, imparting a sleek new look to the property. Led by noted London-based interior designer Fiona Thompson of Richmond International, the Beach Club’s transformation includes a complete redesign of the entrance, lobby and reception area, guestrooms, fitness center, children’s activity center and restaurant, in addition to a newly designed pool area, including three oceanfront swimming pools, an oceanfront bar and upgraded cabanas. The Beach Club’s enhanced facilities also include a new oceanfront ballroom and additional event and meeting space now totaling 10,000 square feet. Part of the renowned Boca Raton Resort & Club, the Boca Beach Club offers guests the unique opportunity to experience an oceanfront luxury boutique hotel while enjoying the world-class amenities of a full-service destination resort

Another introduction to the Boca Raton Resort & Club is the new 24-hour Family Room, located just off Serendipity and offering a multi-purpose space for relaxing and visiting with friends and family. Accented with a dramatic indoor water fountain and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the original Cloister Garden, the space is furnished with large, overstuffed couches and chairs, flat-screen televisions, and tables perfect for puzzles and board games. Additionally, Interior Designer Alexandra Champalimaud created a magnificent redesign of the Boca Bungalows, which emulates a sense of style that is reminiscent of 1950’s Hollywood Glamour.

“This is an exciting time for us, as we complete our more than $200 million evolution and usher in a new era for our iconic Resort & Club,” said Stephen J. Ast, president of Boca Raton Resort & Club.

Spa Economics & Metrics: Do you really know how your spa is doing?

By Judith L. Singer, Ed.D., ISHC, President & Co-Owner, Health Fitness Dynamics, Inc. (HFD)

While the supply of spas has been on a steady rise for many years, the growth has slowed and this is probably good because there are some challenges that need to be addressed... The supply has out-paced the demand, the labor pool from management to service providers is quite limited, and there isn’t enough reliable economic information. These may be “symptoms” that need further examination in order to address any “health” issues that could impinge on the well-being of our industry...

By Roberta Nedry, President, Hospitality Excellence, Inc.

How many times does the guest feel like they are the one waiting versus the wait staff waiting on them? What are the timing issues that make or break a service encounter? How does timing impact the overall guest experience as a service factor? Consider making time to analyze ‘time’ with employees who have “time” with guests. The ‘weight’ of the wait in the world of service delivery should not be underweight or overweight...
