AMSTERDAM, HOLLAND. May 4, 2016 - The QuietRoom Foundation has announced the introduction of the Quiet Room® label . Hotels that carry the Quiet Room® label guarantee that guests will spend their stay in a room that is well-insulated against noise pollution. “A global analysis of online guest reviews found that hotel guests list noise pollution as the No. 1 complaint in almost every city” says Lucas Keizer, president of The QuietRoom Foundation. Quiet Room® is checked and certified by the Knowledge Centre Sound Insulation (KGI), a brand-independent network of specialists in the field of acoustics and sound insulation which is based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Most hotels that benefit from Quiet Room® certification have 4 or 5 star ratings. Surprisingly, many hotels in this market segment do not conform to the high standards of sound insulation which one might expect from top-tier hotels. This exposes them to the risks of reputational damage through bad reviews on social media like TripAdvisor and Booking.com and consequent loss of revenue.

Acquiring the Quiet Room® certification enables these top-class hotels to live up to their perceived reputation as well as giving them a highly effective marketing tool with which to promote their noise-free rooms. The recently opened Ramada Hotel in Amsterdam is a good example. 434 of its rooms have qualified for the Quiet Room label. The owners have consciously chosen to invest in quality and already they are experiencing in an increase in occupancy and expect a complete ROI before the end of the year.

Keizer continues: “Most technical hotel staff lack the necessary knowledge about sound, about legal regulations and how to prevent noise. Which is a shame, because it is unbelievable what some hotel guests have to endure in return for really expensive room rates. When you pay top prices, you should get really silent rooms. But many hotels do nothing to prevent noise from outside such as police sirens or noisy youths, or interior noises such as air-con, flushing toilets or the sounds of amorous neighbours. In fact, the problem already starts with the construction and design of hotel rooms. Few designers know that there are special walls, windows, air-cons and even insulating floor coverings which have fantastic sound insulating qualities. They make it possible to substantially reduce the number of decibels.”

Below are some of the most frequently mentioned noise complaints in hotels:

• flushing toilets
• walking/contact sound of people in the room above
• voices in corridors
• night noises from adjacent rooms
• outside noises
• sounds of hotel bar/restaurant
• sound of air-con/ventilation
• closing doors
• sounds of rolling luggage and trolleys
• sound of adjacent elevator cooling installation

About The Quiet Room® label

The Quiet Room® label, the first and only worldwide certificate for quiet hotel rooms, is an objective standard for the level of noise insulation in hotel rooms. Hotels which already have quiet rooms, can have these rooms tested for the quality of their sound insulation. Based on the measurements, rooms will qualify for one of three silence categories. Hotels which don't meet the criteria can have their rooms sound proofed using the Quiet Room® Design & Build Total Concept, a turnkey package containing all the necessary expertise and sound proofing measures and including certification for the QR label.

About The QuietRoom Foundation

The QuietRoom Foundation stimulates global awareness of noise pollution problems and the promotion of the Quiet Room® label. It provides information about quiet hotel rooms to travellers through its website https://www.quiethotelroom.org/en and other media.
