. April 25, 2016

ECUADOR, S.A. April 25, 2016 - On the evening of Saturday April 16, 2016, Ecuador's cosmopolitan and scenic coastal region suffered a 7.8 earthquake. National Minister of Tourism, Fernando Alvarado immediately issued a tourism update regarding the regions which were impacted.

Those outside of Latin America may not know that Ecuador is the 8th largest economy in the region - after Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru and Chile. Additionally, Ecuador escaped recession during the global economic crisis of 2009, despite the fact that it does not have a sovereign currency, that it fully paid the IMF debt.

In the last few years, Ecuador has concentrated its efforts on diversifying the energy matrix, paying the social debt, and increasing public investment in infrastructure, including hydroelectric power plants, roads, airports, hospitals, and schools.

For South Americans of other nations, and for travelers who have had the opportunity to experience the beauty and unique geology and geography of Ecuador, while appreciating of course, its people -- the pain of a significant earthquake is deep. And for those of our Ecuadorean friends, colleagues and all citizens living in areas closest to the epicenter, we must help overcome their grief and cope with the reality of this significant natural disaster. The people of Ecuador must now focus on the day-to-day demands of rebuilding. And it is our obligation as citizens of the world to determine how to effectively contribute to the reconstruction of impacted areas.

Our September 26-27, 2016 SAHIC conference will remain in Guayaquil. Our colleagues and friends there have let us know that the city did not suffer major damage and the situation is contained. Its airport and hotels remain open and fully operational.

It is the duty of us all who have the means to contribute to the enormous task of restoring hope to those who believe they have lost everything. We must support the reconstruction of a country that demonstrates strength, talent, and creativity.

SAHIC stands proudly in support of our Ecuadorean friends. We care deeply and commit ourselves to supporting the long reconstruction process. In that regard, SAHIC will collaborate with Ecuadorean companies and institutions on this effort.

Our website www.sahic.com will be updated with the latest news and information. For more information about the Ecuador Earthquake Relief Effort and to contribute, please visit www.turismo.gob.ec.

Sincerely,
