Leading Riviera Maya resort kicks off the summer travel season with opportunities to swim with whale sharks, rescue sea turtles and book a family getaway package

The bucket list-worthy experience of swimming with whale sharks is made possible for guests through the resort's in-house travel agency, Thomas More Travel. Guests can partake in what is known as the largest whale shark gathering in the world, as hundreds of these gentle giants - the largest fish in the sea - migrate to the northern waters of the Mexican Caribbean to feed on plankton. From now through mid-September, trips are available to the whale shark feeding grounds off the nearby island of Holbox. In addition to swimming, snorkeling or diving experience with whale sharks, passengers may also spot dolphins, sea turtles and huge manta rays during their adventure.
The summer also marks the return of sea turtle season in the Cancun and Riviera Maya areas. A member of the Puerto Morelos turtle protection campaign, Grand Residences is proud to have protected 12 nests in the corral and to have released 915 baby turtles in 2014. This year, the sea turtle nannies, as they are known at the resort, will return to conduct nightly patrols to search for turtles who have ventured to the beaches to lay their eggs. Once the nests have been located and protected, the nannies stand guard until the eggs hatch and the babies are ready to be released. Guests staying at Grand Residences can participate and attend the turtle releases, and after receiving instructions on how to hold and release the turtles, each person is given a turtle to set free. During the sea turtle season, each guest also receives a complimentary wooden sea turtle as a memento of the experience.
