Lumeria Maui Announces Douglas Drummond as General Manager

. April 07, 2015

Makawao, HI - April 7, 2015 - Hawaii's leading holistic educational and well being retreat, Lumeria Maui, located at the gateway to upcountry Maui, announces its new general manager Douglas Drummond, formerly the U.S. Regional Manager for The Cowshed Spa at SoHo House. Douglas comes to Lumeria Maui having established a personal and professional practice in well being and spirituality.

Ingrid Summerfield, Filament's President and Lumeria's managing partner, remarks that, “Douglas provides the leadership ability Lumeria needs while embodying and truly living the holistic, well being-focused lifestyle the property strives to provide visitors. Douglas has the managerial experience, teaching skills, and a passion for personal growth and transformation that will create unique and meaningful experiences at Lumeria.”
Douglas' journey into spiritual and personal growth began long before he stepped into the industry professionally. Growing up in New Zealand, Douglas was heavily influenced by his family's Maori tradition. Beginning in his teens, he was encouraged to explore holistic well being through a mindful practice of meditation and yoga. A keen interest in fostering his own spiritual and mental growth plus a desire to interact with and assist others in these respects led him to study at Cornell University, graduating in 2005 from the prestigious School of Hotel Administration with a focus in spa and destination operations.

Douglas has personally studied under world-renowned instructors such as yogi Mark Whitwell and Gabrielle Roth in her 5Rhythms® moving meditation practice. In his daily life, Douglas engages their teachings on nutrition, physical practice and spiritual mindfulness. Douglas's passion for these practices led him to become a teacher of both with his partner Lucia Horan.

In keeping with his keen interest for native communities developed in New Zealand, Douglas considers himself a student of Hawaiian and specifically Maui culture and emphasizes the importance of well-rounded educational programs and local engagement as crucial to the experience for this upcountry Maui destination. Lumeria Maui's new ownership is committed to engaging and activating the local culture by establishing inclusive educational programs and building connections with the community, while offering the same experience to Lumeria's visitors. As an example, one recent overnight guest describes her experience during a cultural workshop: “a couple from the community came to talk about and demonstrate dances and prayers in the Hula Kumu tradition…that was a delightful surprise and a lovely experience.” Additionally, new ownership continues to promote the community's performing arts as Lumeria hosts performances featuring local musicians, dancers and artists.

Douglas and Ingrid have overseen the growth of relationships between Lumeria and numerous Maui organizations and cultural groups which include hosting a variety of classes and workshops for Maui youth organizations and hosting meets for local leadership, meditation, and spiritual groups. Lumeria is actively growing its weekly educational program to offer visitors more experiences and teachings rooted in the spiritual and healing practices that play a significant role in the culture and history of Maui and Hawaii. Douglas is looking forward to using Lumeria as a platform to celebrate Hawaiian heritage and promote Maui and specifically the North Shore community: “My Maori connection through Ngai Tahu imparted a deep sense of respect and dedication to indigenous cultures and native tradition. I am inspired by the natural landscape of Maui, its people, and its heritage,” says Douglas. “We have some amazing plans in the near future for better defining Lumeria as a place which regards the people of Maui and their culture and land in reverence, and we cannot wait to share this experience at Lumeria.”
