NEW YORK — HOK, a global design, architecture, engineering and planning firm, received top honors in two categories at the 2014 Gold Key Award for Excellence in Hospitality Design. Sponsored by The International Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show (IHMRS), the Gold Key Awards are among the hospitality industry's most prestigious honors. HOK's Jewel Suite by Martin Katz at The New York Palace Hotel won for Best Suite and the Rosewood Abu Dhabi won for Best Luxury Hotel.

“Receiving accolades at the highest level possible for our design work is a testament to our team's collective efforts,” said Julia Monk, senior vice president and director of hospitality interiors based in HOK's Hong Kong office. “We are particularly grateful to be honored for projects completed both domestically and abroad and for work that celebrates elements of each project's unique heritage and location.”

Located in the historic New York Palace Hotel and boasting commanding views of Midtown Manhattan, the 4,000-square-foot Jewel Suite by Martin Katz interior was created in collaboration with the acclaimed jewelry designer Martin Katz. The Jewel Suite merges romance, abstract elements of nature and Art Deco-inspired elements in a luxurious and luminous setting. Custom-designed furnishings and original art work adorn the space. In addition to winning a Gold Key award, the Jewel Suite has garnered worldwide attention as a coveted space attracting many VIP guests. It recently served as background for a Vanity Fair photo shoot with actress Scarlett Johansson as well as a setting for Oprah Winfrey's original series “Oprah's Next Chapter.”

Across the globe, the Rosewood Abu Dhabi is situated on Al Maryah Island and surrounded by the thriving city of Abu Dhabi and the glistening Arabian Gulf. The nearly 400,000-square-foot, 189-key property conveys the spirit of its location. Its original and opulent aesthetic is derived from local materials including stone, wood and glass. Luxury amenities for the expansive property include 10 distinct culinary and lounge options, a dedicated children's center, spacious meeting rooms, a relaxing spa, an oversized pool with dramatic shades, and outdoor terraces with fire pits. The ultra-luxury, five-star property creates a distinct, personalized luxury lifestyle experience that captures the essence of Rosewood Hotels and Resorts' “Sense of Place” philosophy.

HOK's Hospitality team was responsible for the concept, design and execution of all elements for the interiors of both properties.
