Travel Employment Continues Record Growth

63,800 jobs added thus far in 2014

WASHINGTON - August 6, 2014 - David Huether, senior vice president for research and economics at the U.S. Travel Association, commented on the July jobs data released Friday by the U.S. Department of Labor:

"Travel continues its strong performance in the economy, adding 6,500 direct jobs in July and totaling 63,800 jobs for the first seven months of 2014.

"The travel industry is a leading force in getting Americans back to work. Since losing close to half a million jobs during the Great Recession, travel employment has rebounded and added 757,000 jobs since the recovery began in early 2010, outpacing job creation in the rest of the economy by 42 percent.

"Just last year, 69.8 million international visitors to the U.S. generated 1.2 million American jobs. Through leveraging the benefits of inbound international travel to the U.S and enacting policies like the JOLT Act and reauthorizing Brand USA, which passed the House last week with an overwhelming majority, we could boost the number of inbound visitors and create even more quality jobs."
