. April 14, 2014

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - April 14, 2014 - An intensive, three-day wine education program in San Francisco, CA, April 26-28 delves into the intricacies of California's wine and wine regions, and examines their impact on the world wine. Upon successful completion, program participants will earn the California Wine Appellation Specialist® credential.

The California Wine Appellation Specialist® (CWAS) credential was developed by San Francisco Wine School's founder, David Glancy MS, CWE, and is the only comprehensive education program on California wine. The cutting-edge program is aimed at those active in or aspiring to professional careers in the California wine industry, although attendees also include avid wine-lovers seeking to deepen their understanding of California wine.

“This three-day program packs into a single weekend all of the training usually provided in a nine-week course,” explained Glancy, one of only twelve people in the world to hold both a Master Sommelier diploma and a Certified Wine Educator credential. “We've found that busy professionals prefer total immersion, which boosts their wine expertise fast.”

The three-day intensive includes:

  • Guided tasting and discussion of over 60 California wines
  • Identification and interpretation of USA and California wine laws
  • Discussion of the history and importance of California's American Viticultural Areas (AVAs)
  • Detailed investigation of California's production of wines
  • Examination of the various climates, soils, grapes, and wineries of each region that make it distinctive to the California wine landscape

Regions of study include Mendocino County, Napa Valley, Sonoma County, Santa Cruz, San Francisco Bay, the Delta, Lake County, the Sierra Foothills, Monterey and San Benito, Paso Robles, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and beyond.

The program runs 8:30-5:30 Saturday and Sunday, and 8:30-3:00 Monday at Hyatt Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. Daily continental breakfast and lunch are included with the program. A Sunday tasting dinner with San Francisco Wine School founder David Glancy, MS, CWE and other professional wine experts is available for an additional fee. The optional online exam can be taken within one month of completing the program and enables those who achieve at least an 80% score to display the prestigious CWAS® designation.
