Englewood, CO - January 26, 2011 - Charles S. Peck, president and chief operating officer for Destination Hotels & Resorts, today announced the company will manage The Madison, a 353-room hotel in the heart of the nation's capital. The Madison marks Destination's return to Washington, D.C. to once again manage an iconic independent property in the market. The company appointed veteran hotelier Jim Horsman as managing director of The Madison.

“It's exciting to be back in Washington, D.C.,” said Peck. “We managed The Monarch for a number of years and brought that historic property back to market prominence. We plan to do the same thing for The Madison and we are honored to be working with the new owner, Jamestown, on this great asset. The property has a rich history and we believe we can capitalize on the successes of the past, while establishing new programs, services and traditions that attract both long-time, loyal customers and new guests interested in experiencing the iconic hotel.”

Built in 1963 by the late hotelier Marshall Coyne, The Madison is a longstanding pillar of Washington, D.C.'s central business district, offering 353 guest rooms, 13 suites and 14,000 square feet of event space. When it first opened, The Madison was credited with introducing a true luxury hotel experience to the nation's capital. The property has hosted prominent politicians, world leaders and dignitaries, including every U.S. president since John F. Kennedy.

The Madison is located within blocks of the White House, Embassy Row and the National Mall, making it a convenient option for leisure and business travelers, as well as group and meeting programs. With more than 14,000 square feet of event space, The Madison provides a great option for corporate and executive meetings. The hotel's innovative meeting programs and exemplary services have earned numerous industry awards including Successful Meetings' “Pinnacle Award” and the “Gold Key Award” from M&C.

Destination plans to improve on the hotel's past successes with more than $20 million in enhancements from the hotel's new owner. The property will be repositioned and renovated in phases over the next year and a half to minimize any impacts on the guest experience. Interior designer Dominick Coyne and his team will complete renovations to the guest rooms and communal spaces. The company has tapped veteran hotelier Jim Horsman to lead the repositioning of The Madison and to bring the property to its former glory. As managing director of The Madison, Horsman brings more than two decades of luxury hotel experience to the property. He most recently opened Destination's Stowe Mountain Lodge in Vermont, which was named among the top hotels in the world by Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

Prior to opening Stowe Mountain Lodge, Horsman was the general manager at the award-winning NINE ZERO hotel in Boston when it was a part of the Destination Hotels & Resorts collection. He also spent more than a decade with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, opening and operating a number of properties in such diverse locations as Mexico, Hawaii, Dubai, Philadelphia and Marina del Rey.

“Jim has a reputation for service excellence at the properties he operates,” said Peck. “He has a successful track record of building some of the strongest, most creative teams in our company. We know he'll bring his formula for success to The Madison to lead this iconic property into the next decade.”
