Independence, MO Throws President's Day Party

INDEPENDENCE, MO, December 21, 2006. Enjoy three days of displays, a children's workshop, lectures, puppet shows, themed tea parties, presidential re-enactors, films, toys of the Truman family, Caroline Kennedy's doll collection, live entertainment and special exhibits during the fourth annual Independence President's Day weekend February 17, 18 and 19, 2007. The event, "Toys and Trains: Antique and Unusual" will offer a variety of family friendly activities at various venues throughout the city.

Saturday, Sunday and Monday, look for exhibits of toys and trains at:

Bingham-Waggoner Estate, 313 W .Pacific.

This beautifully restored Civil War era mansion will set up displays throughout the mansion. A large "Backyard" child-sized train will also be set up in the circular driveway.

Free with regular admission, $5 adults, $2 ages 6-16 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Chicago and Alton Depot, 318 W. Pacific.

Built in 1879, the Depot is believed to be the oldest 2-story depot remaining in Missouri. Recently restored, the Depot includes artifacts of the era on the main level and a fully furnished station master's living quarters on the upper level. Displays will spotlight trains.

Free, donations accepted. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

Truman Presidential Museum & Library, 500 U. S. 24 Highway.

The Museum is hosting a major exhibit entitled " A Child in the White House: Caroline Kennedy's Dolls." This exhibit showcases more than 100 dolls and puppets from about 30 countries given to Caroline between 1961 and 1963 by foreign dignitaries, first ladies such as Monaco's Princess Grace and India's Indira Gandhi and ordinary citizens from countries around the world. Caroline's doll house is also on display.

Harry S Truman Home Ticket and Visitors Center, 223 N. Main

First daughter Margaret's toys will be on display during the weekend in the exhibit cases at the center.

Children's Workshop: Cornhusk Doll Making.

Children of the frontier often made toys out of anything that was available to them. In this fun and informative workshop, participants will learn the history of corn husk dolls and how to make and dress them.

Puppetry Arts Institute, 11025 E. Winner Road. "Little Engine in Cow Country" An original overhead shadow puppet show with Anitra Steele. Balloon train engines will also be made for children to take home.

Enjoy a special tea party surrounded by antique and unusual toys at Serendipity, a 1887 three story brick house, in an ultimate Victorian experience. The home is overflowing with unique children's books, dolls, miniature furnishings, tea sets, teddy bears and more.

Tea party begins at 12:30 p.m.

$8.00 includes refreshments and a complete tour of the home.

Our wonderful Truman Presidential re-enactor, dressed in period attire, will meet and greet visitors to the Truman Library. Truman will also offer occasional press conferences in the Museum's auditorium during the day.

10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Enjoy free cookies made favorite recipes of former Presidents.

Free with regular admission, which is $7 adults, $5 seniors, and $3.50 6-18.
